LSU Gumbo Yearbook 2025 - Book - Page 51
In Late September, the Memorial Hill Library held an event to look back at the
history of LSU Student Media. They had copies of different publishing projects from
the past century of LSU. The Giggler and The Purple Pel were humor magazines
from the early 20th century that were incredibly witty and interesting. The Morning
Alternate was a liberal newspaper made by students in the 20th century. It documented historical moments like Angela Davis speaking at Southern. Then there
were the records of the Reveille and The Gumbo. They had compilations of years
of the Reveille newspaper, which was full of ads that would never make it into
today’s issues. The event also had copies of the Gumbo. The 昀椀rst ever print of the
Gumbo sat in perfect condition and held the character of what LSU used to be,
and the other copies of the Gumbo recorded the energy and personality of
Students in the 70s. Hen parties, secret societies, and performances from people
like Elton John and the Jackson 5.
